GENDER VIOLENCE
While pregnant, Joy's mother is not safe in her community due to high rates of gender-related violence. However, the situation is alleviated because of the 'early warning' work of the Gender Peace and Security centre, which helped mother and unborn Joy stay safe during times of unrest.
BORN EARLY
The stress Joy's mother experienced during pregnancy, has affected Joy's lung development. This is known to occasionally result in brain damage. Thankfully, Joy benefits from new practices developed by the Newborn Research Group at Monash Children's Hospital and largely avoids any adverse effects.
NO MORE POVERTY
With the help from international governments and NGOs, there is no longer people living below the poverty line in Fiji.
RUGBY WORLD CUP
Fiji has a mass celebration as the national team gets third place in the Rugby World Cup.
KEEPING GREEN ENERGY WITHIN REACH
Joy wants to move into a home that runs completely on clean energy. Thanks to new technology developed in by Monash's researchers, green ammonia is able to be shipped out and converted into power, making sustainable energy accessible to all those who need it.
CLEAN ENERGY FOR EVERY HOME
Every home in Fiji now has access to cleaner, more affordable energy.
NO.1 HOLIDAY & RETIREMENT DESTINATION
Developments to infrastructure, farming and the medical sector have left Fiji having one of the strongest economies in the region, drawing in tourists and retirees from all over the world - a big change in 50 years.
DROUGHT
The worst drought in years hits Fiji. Previously, it would have had a massive impact on the food production that supplies the island's stores. But because farmers diversified their food-producing plant species based on research from Monash University, there's still plenty of options to keep shelves stocked and people fed.
OLD AGE
Joy passes away at age 86. She's remembered as a kind, loving and generous mother and grandmother.
